If your trip to England takes you thru Cheshire (Liverpool/Manchester area), you might want to visit Beeston Castle. Situated on a rocky volcanic outcrop high above the surrounding fields, Beeston Castle offers some of the finest views in the region.

The history of Beeston goes back more than 4,000 years, when the hill was first used as a fort during the Bronze Age. A castle was built by Ranulf, the 6th Earl of Chester in 1225. King Henry III took the castle in 1237. The castle was important during the English Civil War when it changed hands between the Royalists and Parliamentarians.

The walls, a deep well (that drops to sea level!) and a few rooms are all that remains today, with a lovely grassy knoll in the center. It’s an excellent place for a picnic, to get some sun (if it cooperates) and to absorb the fantastic 360º views. On a clear day you can see 30 miles to the Welsh Mountains and the Pennines.
