Cafe de Jaren

Since the city is so compact, few places in Amsterdam have good views. De jaren, a popular hangout near the university has a great view along the Amstel river. You can sit outside on either of two patios and enjoy a small but tasty menu. They also have a good salad bar. Many people come to meet friends and drink. The large noisy interior is OK for sitting back and catching up on the news offered in free newspapers and magazines.

A Grand Cafe. Cash only.

The Old Indian

This is THE PLACE to look for a pipe. The Old Indian specializes in pipes and the place seems to have the largest selection in Holland, with every kind of pipe you can think of. I’ve spent hours trying to decide and the helpful staff will make your search easier.

They also carry a selection of cannabis books, seeds, clothes and the usual paraphernalia.

Vakzuid

Permanently closed, a historical note.
In the former Olympic Stadium built circa 1928. Bar, restaurant and lounge are open afternoons and evenings. Cocktails and sushi with VJ’s in the bar Thursdays thru Sundays. Different scenes on other nights. Very relaxing place well worth the trip. Take the 6, 16 or 24 trams to the end of the line, and it’s a short walk from there.
